More than half a million health care workers are exposed to surgical smoke every year, according to OSHA data cited by the CDC’s NIOSH program. That smoke carries more than 30 toxic compounds and can include live viruses like HPV, yet many operating rooms still evacuate it inconsistently. The SanSmog surgical smoke evacuation system is built to close that gap, filtering smoke at the source during laparoscopic and electrosurgical procedures.
The SanSmog is a surgical smoke evacuation system, a disposable, passive, multistage filtration device that captures smoke, particles, and aerosolized pathogens generated during laparoscopic and electrosurgical procedures. It connects directly to existing insufflation or suction lines to filter smoke as it’s produced.
We built the SanSmog for surgical teams who need smoke evacuation without adding a separate piece of capital equipment to the room. Because it’s disposable, every procedure starts with a fresh filter instead of a reprocessed unit.
How Does the SanSmog Filter Surgical Smoke?
The SanSmog pulls smoke through a multistage filter that combines ULPA-grade hydrophobic glass microfiber with activated charcoal, capturing both particles and odor at the same time.
Multistage Filtration
The ULPA filter captures 99.995% of particles down to 0.1 microns, the size range that includes aerosolized viruses like HPV, while the activated charcoal layer handles odor and chemical toxins from the smoke.
Flow Rate and Connection
The system runs at a maximum flow rate of 8.0 liters per minute at a 15 mmHg pressure differential, connecting through a standard acrylic Luer fitting and 75 cm of PVC/silicone tubing.
Key Features of the SanSmog Smoke Evacuation System
We built the SanSmog to handle the full range of what surgical smoke carries, not just the visible haze.
Who Is the SanSmog Smoke Evacuation System For?
The SanSmog suits surgical teams performing laparoscopic, laser, or electrosurgical procedures who need reliable smoke evacuation without new capital equipment. It fits operating rooms working to meet smoke evacuation protocols and reduce staff exposure to surgical plume

What is a surgical smoke evacuation system used for?
A surgical smoke evacuation system removes the smoke, particles, and pathogens produced during laparoscopic and electrosurgical procedures. The SanSmog uses multistage filtration to capture that smoke at the source, protecting the surgical team and clearing the surgical site for better visibility.
How much surgical smoke does the SanSmog filter capture?
The SanSmog’s ULPA-grade filter captures 99.995% of particles down to 0.1 microns, the range that includes aerosolized viruses like HPV. An activated charcoal layer handles odor and chemical toxins in the same pass.
Why does surgical smoke need to be evacuated?
Surgical smoke contains more than 30 toxic compounds and can carry live viruses, exposing more than half a million health care workers a year, according to OSHA data cited by NIOSH. Evacuation systems like the SanSmog filter that smoke before it reaches the surgical team.
Is the SanSmog reusable or disposable?
The SanSmog is a disposable, single-procedure device, so every case starts with a fresh, unused filter. This removes the need for cleaning or reprocessing between surgeries.
