Gynecological Instruments by Dr. Vasudeva Panicker

Dr. Vasudeva Panicker was born and brought up in the Nedumudy village of Alleppey district. He has his schooling done in the village’s school. After that, he studied at Trivandrum Medical College in 1973 for a bachelor’s degree in MBBS. Then went on to finish his bachelor’s degree.

He joined the Kerela government health services and worked in the various primary health centers in the rural areas in Kerela. Dr. Vasudeva Panicker then completed a diploma in Anesthesia from Calicut Medical College in 1983 and a Doctor of Medicine in Anesthesia from Trivandrum Medical College in 1986.

Then he completed a Diploma in Gynecology and Obstetrics from Calicut Medical College in 1988. After finishing his studies, he worked as an Anesthetist and Gynecologist in various government hospitals in different parts of Kerala. Through his work and studies, he has gained vast knowledge and experience in obstetric analgesia and anesthesia, epidural and spinal anesthesia, and regional anesthesia in laparoscopic surgery.

And in gynecology, he has an extensive experience in general and high-risk obstetrics, lap surgeries, ultrasonography, infertility, and routine obstetrical and gynecological surgeries.

Because of his passion for supporting needy people, he has remained in Government service till retirement. He has innovated and invented many instruments and techniques. Most are life-saving and cost-saving breakthrough inventions and will be recognized internationally. His innovative devices and methods for treating PPH will help the world to bring down maternal mortality to a considerably low level. Currently, he is Managing Director of Panicker’s Hospital and the National Coordinator of the Maternal Mortality Prevention Cell set up by the Indian Medical Association (IMA).


Super bipolar forceps are a breakthrough invention in electro surgery. Any tissue or vessel of 10 millimeters or more diameters can be effectively and safely coagulated and divided for open and endoscopic surgery. Burned or charred tissue will not stick to the tip of the forceps.

The model shown in the picture is the most versatile and ergonomic. Because of this unique shape of the forceps, they can be used for coagulation in different areas like inside of the abdominal cavity, pelvis, deep in the vagina, etc. 

In the future bipolar forceps with this technology will become an inevitable tool in all operation theatres for all surgeons. And can minimize the use of suture material.

When this bipolar is used for hysterectomy, the total expenditure is only a 90cm vicryl to close the vaginal vault. This technology can also be used in monopolar cautery. Different models are developed for use in ENT, Plastic surgery, etc. This is made of precious metal, autoclavable, lasting for a lifetime, and can be used with any Bipolar Machine.


The rapid cervical ripening device is an invention introduced by Dr. Vasudeva Panicker for rapid ripening and dilatation of the cervix. It is a usual process to undergo before going through labor. 

Cervical ripening is the softening and opening of the cervix before your labor starts. During most of the pregnancy, the cervix is stiff and closed. But during labor, cervical dilation allows the baby to pass through the birth canal.

It is a soft autoclavable, reusable, specially made silicon device. The Foleys catheter is introduced through this device and then passed through the cervical canal to reach the uterine cavity. The bulb of the Foleys catheter is inflated with 60ml of saline, pulled down against the hole of the device, and fixed to the slit on the side. The cervix is sandwiched between the Foleys bulb and the device under pressure. 

Pressure will enable rapid ripening and dilatation of the cervix. The cervical ripening device can be used as an adapter for PPH Suction Cannula and MR Cannula.


This invention by Dr. Vasudeva Panicker helps prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage. About one to five percent of women experience it, most likely with a cesarean birth.

Postpartum hemorrhage is the severe bleeding that occurs after giving birth. It is a dangerous condition that can cause serious problems and even death.

A cannula is inserted into the postpartum uterus to prevent and treat PPH. Once inserted, 700 mm of negative pressure is applied. The wall of the uterine cavity is vigorously sucked into the cannula’s tiny holes, thereby closing all the bleeding sinusoids and arterioles due to the pressure effect of suction. Because the wall of the uterine cavity is vigorously sucked and held by the cannula, the uterus cannot expand and relax even in atonic PPH.

The negative suction pressure is maintained for 30 minutes so that the clotting occurs in these small vessels and bleeding is permanently stopped. After 30 minutes, the suction is released, and the cannula is slightly rotated and removed.

This invention is a safe breakthrough in preventing and treating postpartum hemorrhage. It is effortless and an absolute success.
